West Sussex Poppy Appeal Launch
The Royal British Legion launched the West Sussex Poppy Appeal 2018 at The Wings Museum in Balcombe on Saturday 27th October.
It was attended by visitors of all ages who braved the cold to enjoy a day of entertainment and to support the Royal British Legion in this important centenary year.
The day begun with a 2 minutes silence and prayer led by the Chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, Bruce Forbes. Attendees were then entertained by the talented Angel Delights and Copthorne Silver Band. Local veterans shared their own experiences of military service with children and grown ups alike.
“Listening to live music played from the 40s whilst surrounded by WW2 exhibits was humbling. Reading about individual’s war stories and how different times were in years gone by was inspiring, it made me stop to think and respect the suffering everyone who has lived through a World War experienced.”
The Legion also unveiled a Poppy Appeal branded single decker bus which was wrapped completely in Poppies earlier last week. Visitors were able to explore the bus and were able to make their own poppy whilst thinking about the meaning behind why it is such an important symbol of remembrance.
The bus will now go into circulation within the local area and be available for use by the public. It will be following a West Sussex route and will no doubt attract attention within local communities. The Poppy Man who welcomed visitors onto the bus on Saturday will sadly not be staying but can be seen at a number of events within the county over the coming weeks.
“We had a wonderful time. My family enjoyed the museum and entertainment. It made us all reflect and give thanks to those who have sacrificed to create the world we live in today. Our children loved the bus and are excited to see it around town.”
