Thousands Flock To The 52nd South Of England Show
Despite the typically un-predictable British weather, just under 58,000 visitors flocked to the South of England Show last week as the iconic countryside event hosted its 52nd extravaganza.
Organised by charity The South of England Agricultural Society, the show was established in 1967 to celebrate, and educate the public about, all things agricultural, and 2019’s event was certainly one of the Society’s biggest successes.
The three-day show welcomed visitors of all ages and interests from across the South East and afar. From families and friends enjoying a day out in the fresh air, to gardeners and foodies visiting the wondrous horticulture marquee and gastro-delight stands. They were joined by school children learning about livestock and farming culture, followers of showjumping, farmers, landowners, chicken and goat keepers, together with society members; the event gathered a hugely diverse crowd.
The 50-acre showground hosted a jam-packed programme of entertainment and top quality agricultural, equestrian and craftsmanship competition with over 800 livestock entries, 1,700 show jumping and showing competitors, and 90 Young Artisan Competition entries, along with 5 jaw-dropping displays from the Bolddog Lings motorcycle stunt team, and one very special visit from the children’s picture book character The Gruffalo. All this on top of the show’s epic shopping village featuring around 500 stands, a live music stage, Wine Walk, heritage zone, funfair and more.
Iain Nicol, CEO of the South of England Agricultural Society, said, “What a show! We are beyond grateful to everyone that came to visit our 52nd South of England Show and hope that all our visitors enjoyed the excitement and escapism that the countryside brings. It takes a small army of over 500 volunteers and supporters to host this showcase and celebration of agriculture and our countryside. It also helps support those in the industry whilst also helping the public to learn and experience more about farming and the countryside. After 52 years, we are still regularly attracting around 60,000 visitors to what has become THE must-attend event for everyone living in the South, no matter their interests. The Show appeals to so many, from young families with babes in arms to those in their 90s discovering the joy of the countryside and all it has to offer.”
The Society’s next show is the Autumn Show & Game Fair. Held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October 2019, the event celebrates all things harvest, countryside sports, dogs and more. For more information or to book tickets visit www.seas.org.uk
