The South Of England Show Is Back Showcasing The Best Of Countryside Living
Heralded as ‘THE’ ultimate countryside gathering in the South, the South of England Show is returning this year from 6-8 June with the 2019 event roster featuring everything that is great about countryside living.
Taking place at the iconic South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex, the ever-popular event has been held annually since 1967. Today it has rightly earned the ‘must attend date’ spot in the society calendar thanks to its varied programme of agricultural displays and delights.
The three-day spectacular will of course still feature the best of British agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and equestrianism with multiple displays and competitions throughout the programme. However, this year’s event will – more than ever – centre around the pure ‘everyday’ yet undiscovered pleasures of countryside lifestyle, products and activities.
Wine lovers can rejoice as the showground will host its first ever Wine Walk endorsed and supported by WineGB, enabling enthusiasts to learn about the fabulous vineyards right on our doorstep whose vintages now rival some of the world’s topproducers.
Foodies will love the artisan and street food markets featuring a mouth-watering selection of food and drink and showcasing the best of ground to plate.
Those who admire rural crafts and independent boutique shopping can spend hours wandering around the 400+ stalls selling a variety of homeware, seasonal plants and gardening equipment, fashion, gifts, and more.
For the outdoor lover there’s fly-fishing, wood carving and even hedge laying demonstrations, as well as the heritage zone with battle re-enactments, plus lots more.
It’s not all for the adults though – there’s a mass of entertainment for the children with animal meet and greets, visits from the beloved children’s book character The Gruffalo, and so much more. There’s even a music stage where the whole family can relax and enjoy classic and original repertoire from local music students. In the Discover the Countryside zone there will be pond dipping to try, birds of prey to admire and, new for this year, there’ll even be water buffalo to meet!
Iain Nicol, CEO of the South of England Agricultural Society, said: “Every year we welcome thousands of visitors to The South of England Show and this year we’re expecting a record 70,000+guests over the event. The show is designed to provide a fantastic day out in the countryside and reinforce the delights that countryside living can bring. Today, in our fast-paced lives we can sometimes forget how much the countryside can provide us, from the organic food and the wine we drink with dinner, to our lovingly handcrafted furniture using age-old methods – it all started with agriculture and that is simply what we are celebrating with this show.
“Importantly though, most people don’t realise that we – the South of England Agricultural Society – are actually a charity and events like this, as well as showcasing agriculture, horticulture and the countryside to the general public, help us raise vital funds to support people with an interest or involvement in agriculture and other related land-based industries. From inspiring school children to learn about the land, to offering travel bursaries for people working in the farming sector or helping with funding towards agricultural research – we want people to know that when you visit The South of England Show, they will also be supporting these fantastic projects and people across the South East.”
