A Riot Of Colour This Spring At Standen House And Garden

Marvel at the sight of thousands of spring blooms filling the twelve acre hillside garden at Standen House & Garden for the annual Tulip Festival.

Following last year’s success, the glorious spring festival sees over 20,000 spring blooms planted in addition to 9,000 tulips bulbs causing the beds to burst with colour throughout April and May while on the estate, bluebells flood the woodland with shades of blue.

Standen’s first owner, Margaret Beale, was a keen plants woman who played an important role in the design of the garden and kept a garden diary which recorded the plants she trialled and the weather conditions over the years.

James Masters, Head Gardener says: “Over 80 staff and volunteers were involved in the planting which took place in November and December last year. Nothing on this scale has ever been done at Standen before, but it is very much influenced by Margaret Beale’s planting of many bedding plants and bulbs”

With all planting planned to complement the colours of the house and landscape, the festival is a feast of visual inspiration for any gardener or budding photographer. Those wishing to pick up planting tips can find stewards throughout the garden to offer advice, join a photography workshop or even learn a new skill in a lino printing workshop inspired by the spring garden.

Standen’s Tulip Festival runs mid April to end of May. Standen’s garden is open daily between 10am – 5pm, (last entry to the house is 4pm), with a programme of guided tours and special events to enjoy the gardens. Free entry for National Trust members.
