Relax and take five…

Slow down, relax, breathe. It need only take a few minutes but can work wonders to restore your wellbeing.
You may or may not be into yoga, mindfulness, meditation, tai chi or any number of related disciplines that are so popular now – it doesn’t really matter. Everyone has the ability to switch off from the daily hustle and bustle, and we all benefit hugely from shifting our focus to the here and now every now and then.
So, where to start? If you like the idea of professional guidance, there are many classes, workshops and teachers in Mid Sussex that will help you find inner calm. Or maybe you prefer to keep it simple and just need a few effective ways to build stress relief into your daily routine? Here are five rebalancing tips you can try right now.
Create your own sanctuary, a special place for relaxation. It doesn’t have to be a whole room – perhaps just an armchair by the window. Add scented candles or soothing music and just be.
Snuggle up with a soft blanket, close your eyes and drift away. As little as 15 minutes will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energised for the rest of the day.
Sit up straight with your eyes closed and slowly inhale through your nose. Feel the breath rising from your belly all the way to the top of your head. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Repeat
for a few minutes to clear any tension.
Lie on the floor with your bottom against the wall and your legs resting straight up. Feel the delicious stretch in your body while you let go of your mind.
Go outside, sit on a bench and just observe. What do you hear, see, smell? Let the wind, birdsong, flowers, leaves, trees etc wash over you while you become one with the natural world around you.
To describe relaxation as the art of doing nothing is a bit of misnomer, in my view. After all, you are doing something very worthwhile indeed: you’re reconnecting with your body and mind. You’re coming home to yourself. You’re renewing your energy and finding the strength to go back out there and be the best you can be.
