Phoenix Choir Of Crawley
by Angela Finn
Phoenix Choir of Crawley was formed in 2016 by the merger of two long established Crawley Choirs. We currently have about 65 members, who enjoy meeting together at St Mary’s Church in Southgate, Crawley, on Thursday evenings to rehearse with our Music Director, Sam Hayes.
A new venture this season was a weekend trip to East Anglia to sing in two beautiful churches, and of course to enjoy socialising and getting to know each other better.
We are now preparing for our concert ‘Christmas is Coming!’, which will be held on Saturday 15th December at St Wilfrid’s Catholic School in Crawley. Headlining the programme will be Vivaldi’s fabulous ‘Gloria’; with its exuberant opening and memorable tunes this piece is always popular with singers and audiences. There will also be several short choral works suited to the season, and a chance for the audience to join in with some of our favourite carols. During the interval there will be an opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine or juice, and mince pies.
In January 2019 we will begin preparing for our next concert ‘Magical Mozart’, which will be on 6th April at The Hawth in Crawley. We will be joined by guest singers from other choirs to sing Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, a choral work of awesome power. Its sheer beauty and intensity have ensured it a leading place in the choral repertoire. We will also be singing Mozart’s ‘Coronation Mass’.
