Opportunities To Sing With Successful Local Choir
Sussex Chorus enjoyed a hugely successful Summer concert when well-known composer, Will Todd, joined them at the piano for a performance of his own music. The large audience in Hurst College Chapel clearly loved the whole programme but for the main item, the jazz-influenced Mass in Blue, they really showed their appreciation with lots of applause throughout and enthusiastic cheering at the end.
Some singers had been a bit apprehensive when their new Director of Music and Conductor Jack Thompson proposed music with such distinctive jazz rhythms – and some of it proved challenging to learn. But Jack’s skill and humour at rehearsals, coupled with a fair bit of ‘homework’ did the trick, ensuring singers really enjoyed the concert and came away feeling very proud of their achievement.
September sees the start of a new season and rehearsals begin for the first concert in November which will comprise some lovely music from French composers, Fauré, Vierne and Duruflé.
The Christmas programme will promote contemporary music once again by including The Manchester Carols by Sasha Johnson Manning, set to words by recent Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. For March 2020, there will be a performance in Burgess Hill of one of Bach’s great oratorios, the St John Passion, which promises to be a wonderful singing experience and unmissable concert. Jack is still working on the programme for the Summer concert but he promises us it will have “a distinctly American theme”. Given his music choices to date, that could be truly amazing.
Might you like to enjoy all this and become a singer with Sussex Chorus? The choir best suits those with a bit of a musical background – and it doesn’t matter if that’s somewhat rusty. Other joiners have found they soon pick it up again and more experienced singers are always willing to give support.
There’s the option to try out a couple of rehearsals before joining up and you’ll find lots more information and contact details on our website www.sussexchorus.org
Rehearsals are on Mondays from 7.15 to 9.30pm, include a sociable, mid-time break, and are held at St Paul’s Catholic College, Jane Murray Way, Burgess Hill.
