The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend Attracts Record Numbers

Back for its eighth consecutive year, over 1,600 people ran through the beautiful Mid Sussex countryside and Towns over three incredible days of running in the District.

Taking place in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill over the bank holiday this unique event hosted a total of 10 races, offering runners a choice of challenges from 1 kilometre to the classic Marathon distance of 26.2 miles.

Council dignitaries presented race medals to participants in every event, plus a special commemorative medal for the 233 runners completing the Marathon distance over the 3 days.

Over 200 energetic children took part in the Mid Sussex Fun Run and Mile events in each town. Minister for Sport & Civil Society and creator of the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend, Mims Davies MP, attended the Haywards Heath event. Starting the Mid Sussex Mile Race in Haywards Heath she said: “It’s great to be back. This is the only marathon in the UK that is made up of 3- legs. Seeing all these children taking part in the Fun Run and Mile is fantastic, good luck to you all. Thank you to everyone who has supported this event. We should be proud of what is going on today and every year in Mid Sussex.”

80 people volunteered their time as course marshals, which included the involvement of Ardingly College, Haywards Heath Harriers, Burgess Hill Runners, Burgess Hill Lions and the Friends of Ashenground and Bolnore Woods.

Event Director Simon Adby said: “An event on this scale could not take place without the generous support of all our wonderful volunteers. They lined each of the three main race routes directing and supporting all the runners. We have received numerous messages of thanks from the runners thanking the marshals for their enthusiasm and encouragement. We are also extremely grateful to East Grinstead Rugby Club and The Burgess Hill Academy who have allowed us to return to their venues and, along with Victoria Park, provide ideal locations for hosting this event.”

The dates for 2020 have been announced as 2-4th May. Those wishing to take part can take advantage of an “early bird” offer by securing their place at this year’s prices. Register via: https://midsussexmarathon.co.uk/how-to-enter/
