by Peter Blenkarn
There are many types of arthritis that we see in our practice that affect different joints in different ways. One thing they all have in common is the inflammation that can be present in the joints which can often make joints feel sore and swollen. A commonly reported issue with arthritis is an increase in pain, stiffness or swelling with a change in the weather or temperature. Certain types of arthritis are commonly treated with medication which can come with some side-effects. Here are some of our top natural approaches to helping to manage your arthritis this winter.
- 1 – Get regular exercise
It’s important to keep your joints moving to prevent them from stiffening up, by keeping your muscles strong and active your joints will be supported more effectively. We recommend low impact exercise like walking, swimming or water aerobics 2-3 times per week.
- 2 – Wrap up warm
It’s important to keep your joints feeling comfortable, if you know it’s going to be cold outside ensure your hands and knees are well protected from the cold by wearing suitable trousers and gloves.
- 3 – Keep moving
Short, regular intervals of movement will help to keep your joints more supple. If you’re sitting for a while, try to get up every 20 minutes to stretch your legs and grab a glass of water.
- 4 – Maintain a healthy weight
If you are carrying a little extra weight, this can increase the load on your joints. We recommend trying to maintain a healthy weight by improving your diet and exercising regularly.
- 5 – Anti-inflammatory foods
Certain foods have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties such as turmeric, ginger, berries and omega-3 rich foods like fish and nuts. This can assist in reducing the inflammatory effect of arthritis in some cases.
Of course, it’s important to consult your doctor or preferred health professional before trying these tips to make sure they’re right for you.
