Keep it Local Folks
A weekend at the beginning of October heralded the latest Keep it Local Craft Show at The South Downs Heritage Centre near Hassocks.
Sally Ross, one of the organisers said “We had a fantastic weekend; the visitors were all so complimentary and were genuinely surprised at the strength in depth of the exhibits. That’s one of the major benefits of organising a local craft show – the wealth of talent never ceases to surprise even me and when we think we’ve seen everything that the local artists and craftspeople can produce, something new and original pops into the mix. Visitors too, enjoy the “village fete” atmosphere that only a locally centred event can engender.
From an organiser’s point of view, we were looked after so well by the Heritage Centre staff too. We’ve moved inside from our original position which incorporated an area under canvas. Torrential rain in the past has proved that the canvas just can’t cope with all that the local downland weather can throw at us.
In October, we had beautiful hand-crafted items to suit every pocket and taste. A colourful painting sold for hundreds of pounds, but equally, there were plenty of gifts for under £5 too. Wood turners exhibited; there was needlework to see, olive oil soaps, knitting, ceramics, jewellery, paper-craft and colourful fused glass, to name a few. There were no mass-produced items from overseas and certainly no tat”.
The next Keep it Local Craft Show at The Heritage Centre is on Friday 8th December until Sunday 10th December – don’t miss the opportunity to buy one or two very special, unique Christmas presents. Your visit can incorporate seeing all the wonderful gifts on offer from South Downs Nurseries too. The magnificent Food Hall, garden centred gifts and more commercially made British crafted items. There is also a huge Christmas display, Santa to meet (on Saturday and Sunday) and of course the pet, clothing, book and gift departments which are permanently on show. Why not spend a little time looking for some really innovative gifts – gifts which not everyone else will have seen? The Keep it Local Craft Show is open from 10 – 4:30 on all three days.
