Immerse Yourself In Nature An A Forest Bathing Session At Standen

Let the stresses of everyday life drift away during forest bathing sessions set amongst the National Trust’s Standen House and Garden, located within the picturesque Sussex countryside. Forest Bathing is a traditional Japanese awareness meditation, that helps alleviate anxieties and skilled tutor Helena Skoog will guide you through these bespoke courses at Standen during the spring and summer this year.

But what exactly is forest bathing? Helena tells us more, ‘Forest Bathing is an excursion into the sensual healing experience of nature, a welcome time-out from a racing mind – into an inner space of peace, contentment and gentle experience. Being at ease is the swiftest path to well-being, and the subtle languages of the forest hold a natural calming energy that can be accessed through simple awareness practices.’

Standen is the ideal setting for forest bathing as the estate is part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hollybush and Rockinghill Woods form the backdrop for these sessions, with the mixture of oak, sweet chestnut, ash, hazel and alder trees setting the scene, along with indicators of ancient woodland from bluebells to orchids and dog’s mercury. William Morris, founder of Morris & Co. whose iconic designs can be found across the house at Standen, used inspiration from the natural world around him for his designs. This connection with the Arts & Crafts movement along with its location makes Standen the ideal setting for forest bathing. Helena explains why, ‘You can explore William Morris’s fascination with trees and nature’s patterns, through the eyes of a keen observer, guided by the forms of the woodlands.’

Visitor Experience Manager Richard Grudzinski had this to say about enjoying guided meditation at Standen, ‘We are really excited to welcome Helena and forest bathing to Standen as part of our Renew, Recharge, Revive @Standen programme where, throughout the year, we will be inviting our visitors to discover how connecting with nature and getting creative can help increase our health and wellbeing’.
