Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries, A Local Practice Which Goes The Extra Mile
by Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries
With a new home visit service, two veterinary surgeons with a specific interest in exotic pets and an impressive array of the latest, modern equipment; Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries offers a lot more than meets the eye.
With surgeries in the Old Bakehouse in Partridge Green and an equally charming victorian cottage in Henfield, Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries presents the image of a traditional village veterinary practice. To a certain extent this is true – many clients are so well known that they can be identified by the way in which they pull into the car park before they set foot in the practice! “I enjoy catching up with clients who have been coming here since before I started just as much as I do introducing new people to the practice,” acknowledges Sue Bradford who has been part of the reception team for over 20 years! As part of the local community, the experienced team of six veterinary surgeons, eight nurses and nine receptionists take pleasure in the practice’s involvement in local events. There is a regular calendar of dog shows to judge, fundraisers to sponsor and schools to visit among other things.
However, behind the scenes, the principle reason for the practice’s existence is more evident than ever. That is, providing excellent veterinary care to the local community and their pets, which is achieved in a variety of ways. When Jonathan and Annelise Underwood took ownership of Hawthorn vets in April 2012, the practice already had a reputation as a caring and welcoming, family run business and this is something that they are proud to have maintained. With many veterinary surgeries now owned by big, corporate companies it is nice that the practice has maintained its identity and local credentials. “We are very lucky to have such a great team at the practice. Everyone works well together and this is one of the reasons why we are able to offer such a welcoming environment for our clients and their pets,” commented head nurse Danielle who is also married to veterinary surgeon Fabian – family is definitely a theme at the practice!
As well as maintaining the core values of the practice, in the past six years there has also been considerable investment and development of the facilities and the services offered. The main surgery in Partridge Green has a new consulting room and dental suite which has increased capacity to reduce waiting times and made treatment of dental problems easier and effective. A dedicated cat ward was created last year to provide feline patients with some peace and quiet from their canine counterparts! The branch in Henfield was upgraded in 2015 to include a new operating theatre, kennel block, dental suite and is fully air- conditioned. In terms of equipment, new laboratory analysers enable the practice to produce accurate blood and urine results on the same day the samples are taken or submitted. This is especially valuable for pre-anaesthetic testing and for emergencies. A new state of the art digital X-ray system was acquired in 2017 and most recently, this year, the practice has upgraded to the latest veterinary ultrasound system. Add to that the vast array of modern anaesthetic monitoring equipment, digital ECG machines and endoscopes and you’ll see that Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries are equipped to deal with all eventualities.
Two areas where Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries stands apart from many other practices are the services they offer to exotic pet owners and their discount home visit service. Veterinary Surgeon Meggie Kenaghan joined the practice in March 2017 and she along with Annelise have a specific interest in exotic pets such as reptiles and birds. Clients come from all over Sussex to see them with their unusual pets! Amongst the specialist equipment for the treatment of exotics is a vivarium where reptiles can be hospitalised if necessary. “We are seeing more and more clients with exotic pets,” says Meggie, “we all enjoy the variety of species that we see and the challenges that these unusual pets can bring.”
Hawthorn vets have always provided a home visit service, but last year this was expanded with the addition of a practice ambulance and the offer of discounted visits for only £30 within a 15 mile radius of the practice. Discount visits have proved particularly popular with clients who own anxious pets or who have difficulty in travelling themselves and vet Rebecca Furth has found herself providing the service to clients in a wide area around the practice. “Discount visits are currently offered on Mondays and have to be booked by Friday afternoon the week before,” explains Rebecca. “This allows us to plan the order of the visits and their route in advance. Clients can choose a morning or afternoon slot and we advise them on the day of an estimated time of arrival.”
Another very popular development has been the introduction of the ‘Practice Health Plan’. This scheme allows clients of the practice to pay monthly for vaccinations, flea treatments, worming and health checks – all at a reduced price. Members of the health plan also receive a blood and urine test annually, discounts on other products and services within the practice and FREE nurse clinics throughout the year. “Many clients really like the ability to spread the costs,” advises Jonathan. “It’s also reassuring for them to know that by being a member of the plan, their pet is receiving gold standard preventative health care.”
Overall it has been a pretty eventful six years in the history of Hawthorn Vets and an exciting period for both the staff and clients alike. We look forward to seeing what happens in the future!
