Free NHS health checks for people over 40

The Mid Sussex Wellbeing team is offering residents in Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint the chance to sign up for a free NHS health check, helping them to get on the right path to a healthy future.

A recent review by Public Health England showed that simply checking the blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle of people aged 40-74 could prevent 650 deaths, 1,600 heart attacks and 4,000 cases of diabetes each year.

Organised by the Mid Sussex Wellbeing team, the free NHS health checks can help to spot future problems at an early stage, giving residents a better chance of avoiding diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and dementia. Together, these vascular diseases are the biggest cause of preventable deaths in the UK, affecting more than four million people.

The free NHS health checks are run by trained health professionals and take just 30 minutes. Everybody who takes part will receive a blood pressure check, a cholesterol measurement, and will have their BMI (Body Mass Index) calculated by measuring height and weight. After the health check there will be an opportunity to discuss the results with a trained Wellbeing Advisor, who will provide personalised advice on how to lower the risk of future problems and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Appointments are available now and must be booked in advance. Sessions will be held in Hurstpierpont on Thursday 31 October and there will be a special event reserved just for men in Burgess Hill on Monday 11 November.

“It is so difficult to know if you are developing health problems that could lead to vascular disease because there are often no symptoms for you to pick up on,” said Councillor Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community. “Thankfully we can still catch problems early and make important lifestyle changes if you sign up for a quick NHS health check.

“Our sessions take place away from clinics in a relaxed and informal setting so you can feel more comfortable and able to discuss any health and wellbeing concerns you may have. The checks take just 30 minutes and it is so important to sign up because if we can spot signs of a serious problem then it could save your life.”
