Christmas In Haywards Heath
by Nicola Bird and Ruth de Mierre
We all know Haywards Heath townsfolk are very special people and, at Christmas, our community truly comes together to bring happiness, joy and laughter to everyone with our Christmas Festival Weekend. Nicola Bird and Ruth de Mierre give us details of the festive programme
The Christmas Festival Weekend is on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November in the centre of town. Hosted and sponsored by The Orchards, the fun begins at 11.00am on Saturday, with entertainment for all on the stage; school choirs, concert bands, Spanish dancing, marching bands, amazing dance troupes and stilt- walking jazz musicians.
In the afternoon we’ll be welcoming Father Christmas with his elves and real reindeer and, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, there’ll be a grand parade through the Town, before Santa switches on the lights at 5.00pm to herald the beginning of a wonderful Christmas! There’ll also be fireworks in Victoria Park at 5.30pm, courtesy of Haywards Heath Town Council, to round off a perfect day.
We all know Christmas isn’t just one day, so Santa will be back on Sunday 25th November and the entertainment and merriment will go on and on! The amazing Oathall Jazz Band will begin the fun at 11.30am, followed by the Mid Sussex Band, a local drama group and musicians from Ensemble Reza Community Orchestra.
Santa will return on the three following Saturdays, the 1st, 8th and 15th December, when he’ll be joined by carol singers and, on Saturday 8th, an animal school where you can meet, cuddle, learn about and feed new friends. We’re also welcoming the Ditchling Morris Men on Saturday 22nd December to really get you in the festive mood before Christmas Day.
Nicola Bird, Orchards Manager, says, “Christmas is a time for family and friendship, as well as for giving and receiving gifts. We’re very lucky, here, to have so many friends who give their talents to bring joy and happiness to so many of our community.”
PRIMARY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION
Meanwhile, all the local primary school children have been creating wonderful designs for our Town’s Christmas Card Competition, the best of which will be displayed in The Orchards from the last week in October and judged at an award ceremony set for Monday 19th November. There’ll be prizes for the winners and the overall winner will be the official 2019 Christmas card for The Orchards.
Children from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, Warden Park Primary Academy, Harlands Primary School, Northland’s Wood Primary Academy and Bolnore Village Primary School are all hard at work designing their perfect Christmas ‘Greetings’ within three age categories. The Town Mayor Cllr Jim Knight and Katie Heath will be in the Orchards in the week beginning 12th November to judge the entries and, more importantly, will hand out awards and prizes on the 19th November at 12.30pm.
Orchards Manager, Nicola Bird, says, “We’ve so much talent here in our Town, I’ve been amazed at the high standard of creativity and so proud to have the winning entry as our annual Christmas card.”
