It’s time to talk coats. Sara Whatley takes a look at some of the key trends coming your way this autumn and winter
It may be hard to imagine wrapping yourself up in a coat what with all this glorious sunshine, but guess what? Autumn is just around the corner. Get ahead of the game and sort your winter coat out now; you’ll be thankful when faced with a suddenly chilly morning or a late evening stroll when a pully doesn’t quite cut it.
Think carefully before investing in a new coat – it’s an integral part of your autumn/winter wardrobe and one that will be worn day in, day out, so make sure you are 100% happy with it.
There are a few key trends to look out for this year, including some old favourite classics and some exciting new looks:
DRESSING GOWN COATS
Like you never left your bed, snuggle into a deep collar and belt up. These super cosy coats will keep you toasty warm inside and out, just don’t forget to take your slippers off.
LONG WOOLLEN COATS
A bit like the grown-up version of the dressing gown coat but can be worn fitted – giving you a long elegant silhouette – or oversized – guaranteed to fit over bulky jumpers. Patterns adorn this style of coat, from tartan and windowpane checks to houndstooth plaid and gingham or if you fancy something a little simpler try one of the many single colour options in trend. Just make sure it’s bright – pink was a big look on many of the runways!
FAUX FUR AND ANIMAL PRINT COATS
The faux fur trend has catapulted into popularity in these recent years. Bundle up in a bright faux fur jacket to make a statement or indulge in the animal print trend. Word on the street is dare to pair – go top to toe animal print!
Faux fur collars and cuffs also look great on most outerwear and bring an element of snow queen glamour to your look.
Heading down from the slopes, ski jackets have made their way to street style. A more relaxed style of coat which embraces the sportswear trend, you can still dress them up with a fur collar and a feminine pretty pastel colour. Best paired over casual separates like jeans, joggers and hoodies.
The shearling coat has been embraced by designers this season with both faux or real shearling readily available. Something that makes this coat so special is that you can wear it in so many different ways, for example:
- Full length in a knee grazing cocoon
- Cosy lining in an aviator jacket
- Shearling trim
- Classic biker
The fabric, once the preserve of flooring, has taken a leap into the fashion world. A big hit in 2017, vinyl coats are back again this season to add a daring edge to your wardrobe. Go all out with a trench or take a baby step with a short vinyl jacket. Black or red look particularly striking with this trend.
