20th Anniversary Sculpture Exhibition At Borde Hill Garden

Sculpture Exhibition – a 20th Anniversary Celebration of Art

10th May – 30th September 2019, Borde Hill Garden, West Sussex

Towering kinetic wind art and mythological figures will transform the historic Sussex Garden at Borde Hill into a stunning outdoor gallery, as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their Sculpture Exhibition.

Opening on 10th May, the carefully selected sculptures will be strategically placed throughout the 17 acre formal Garden, working in harmony with the renowned horticultural collection that has put Borde Hill on the map. Including over 80 figurative and abstract works in a diverse range of materials from bronze to glass, the display will highlight fresh new talent with some familiar names returning to be part of this special celebration of art.

Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke, Managing Director and owner of Borde Hill, says: ‘The Sculpture Exhibition is a highlight of the year here at the Garden. This being the 20th anniversary means we are looking forward to a true spectacle as we celebrate our long tradition of supporting the work of both established and up-and-coming artists’.

Will Carr’s kinetic wind sculpture ‘Transfiguration’ will captivate viewers as it twists and turns in the breeze in front of the Elizabethan Mansion. Wandering further into the garden ‘rooms’, visitors will encounter ‘Icarus I’ by Nicola Godden, a striking winged figure commissioned for the London 2012 Olympic Village. The mythological theme continues with ‘Narcissus’ by Teresa Wells, a figurative bronze inspired by the boy who fell in love with his own reflection.

Exploring the Garden’s hidden spaces, visitors will stumble across exquisite stone carvings, alongside works in resin, glass and ceramic. Many pieces will draw inspiration from the natural world, including ‘Petals’ by Nicolas Moreton, ‘Bloom’ by Zoe Singleton and ‘Feathers 2’ by Stephanie Cushing. The pioneer of stonebalancing art, Adrian Gray, will defy the laws of nature with his large weathered stones and boulders. Balancing precariously, they will fascinate visitors with their impossibility.

Smaller pieces will be exhibited inside the Glasshouse and Green Tree Gallery, encouraging visitors to explore every nook and cranny of the historic garden and grounds. All works will be on sale, with something to suit every taste and pocket.

The exhibition will run daily from 10th May – 30th September 2019 with admission included in the standard entry price.
